Trevoh Chalobah has provisionally agreed to join Inter Milan, but the Serie A champions must overcome a significant financial hurdle to secure the Chelsea defender this summer.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that the England international has given the “all-clear” to personal terms with Cristian Chivu’s side. However, Inter still need to satisfy Chelsea’s valuation after the West London club rejected an opening bid worth €25 million for the 26-year-old centre-back.

The pursuit has gained urgency as Inter’s alternative defensive targets move elsewhere. Manchester City’s Nathan Ake has completed a transfer to Turkish club Fenerbahce for £7 million plus add-ons, formally ending any interest from the Nerazzurri in the Netherlands international. Meanwhile, Sassuolo’s Tarik Muharemovic is heading to Juventus in an €18 million deal, and Lazio’s Mario Gila has agreed terms with city rivals AC Milan.

With these options falling away, Chalobah has emerged as the primary candidate to reinforce Inter’s backline ahead of the new campaign. Serie A newcomers Como have also monitored the situation and plan to hold talks with the player’s representatives, though reports indicate their immediate recruitment priorities lie elsewhere, leaving Inter as the frontrunners.

The timing presents additional complexity for all parties. Chalobah is currently on World Cup duty with England ahead of their Round of 16 meeting with Mexico. He is due to turn 27 on Sunday, potentially making this transfer a pivotal career move as he enters his peak years.

Chelsea have demonstrated willingness to monetise homegrown talent during this window, but their rejection of the €25 million proposal suggests they value the academy graduate higher than Inter’s current offer. Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio now faces pressure to structure a deal that meets Chelsea’s demands while fitting the club’s financial framework before pre-season begins, knowing that Juventus and Milan have already secured their defensive reinforcements.
