Saël Kumbedi appears destined to depart VfL Wolfsburg just months after making his transfer permanent, with the French full-back attracting significant interest across Europe following the club’s relegation from the Bundesliga.
The 21-year-old, who contributed five assists in 24 top-flight appearances last season, is not expected to remain in Germany’s second division despite signing a long-term contract that runs until 2029. Wolfsburg’s drop to the 2. Bundesliga has accelerated speculation regarding his future, with several clubs reportedly positioning themselves to secure his services.
Serie A and Portuguese Interest
Italian duo Lazio and Roma have emerged as prominent suitors for the former Lyon defender, according to reports. Both Serie A sides are understood to be monitoring Kumbedi’s situation closely as they assess options to strengthen their defensive flanks.
Interest is not confined to Italy. Portuguese giants FC Porto and Dutch club Feyenoord have also been linked with moves for the France youth international. Additionally, an unnamed Ligue 1 club has reportedly joined the race, though the identity of the French side remains undisclosed at this stage.
From Loan to Permanent Deal
Kumbedi’s brief tenure at the Volkswagen Arena began with a loan move from Olympique Lyonnais last summer. Following an encouraging start, Wolfsburg exercised their option to sign him permanently for a fee in the region of €9 million.
However, the club’s subsequent relegation has altered the landscape. Despite the long-term investment, Wolfsburg are unlikely to obstruct Kumbedi’s departure should an appropriate offer materialise, particularly given his rising market value and desire to continue playing at the highest level.
Career Progression
A product of Le Havre’s respected youth academy, Kumbedi initially joined Lyon in 2022. He made 62 appearances for Les Gones before seeking opportunities elsewhere. His versatility and attacking output from full-back have marked him as one of the more promising young defenders in his age bracket.
With Wolfsburg now preparing for life in the second tier, Kumbedi’s immediate future appears to lie away from Lower Saxony. The coming weeks are likely to determine whether he opts for a return to France, a switch to Italy, or a new challenge in Portugal or the Netherlands.
