France head into the World Cup 2026 last-16 stage as the undisputed leaders of the power rankings, with all six judges placing Les Bleus at the summit following a dominant display against Sweden.

The French side look unstoppable after blowing away their opponents, with Michael Olise and Kylian Mbappé capable of producing moments of genius against even the best-organised defences. Mbappé told reporters he wanted to “enjoy this World Cup to the fullest,” and his form suggests that enjoyment will continue as the tournament progresses.

Spain sit prominently in the standings after an “almost perfect” victory over Austria, according to head coach Luis de la Fuente. Lamine Yamal is improving with every match, while goalkeeper Unai Simón has yet to concede a goal. Mikel Oyarzabal’s clinical finishing has helped La Roja find their rhythm after a sluggish group phase.

Last-16 ties confirmed

The knockout bracket has thrown up several tantalising fixtures. Co-hosts Mexico will face England in their final match on home soil before the tournament moves to the United States. Mexico have thrived at the Azteca Stadium, with Gilberto Mora producing a fantastic display against Ecuador to send the home crowd into raptures.

England advanced despite a pedestrian performance against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with Harry Kane’s clinical finishing proving the difference. However, manager Thomas Tuchel faces concerns over a disjointed overall performance and a ragged defensive display ahead of the daunting trip to Mexico City.

The United States will be without striker Folarin Balogun for their clash with Belgium after the forward received a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite the dismissal, Mauricio Pochettino’s side held firm and added a second goal to demonstrate their resilience.

Warning signs for reigning champions

Argentina remain in contention with Lionel Messi leading the tournament’s scoring charts, but there are fitness concerns after the world champions required 120 minutes to overcome Cape Verde in Miami’s draining heat. Several players, including Messi, appeared physically and emotionally spent by the end of the contest. They face Egypt in the next round with limited recovery time.

Morocco have demonstrated their semi-final pedigree from four years ago by defeating the Netherlands on penalties after Issa Diop forced extra time with a 91st-minute equaliser. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou held his nerve in the shootout to seal progression. Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi stated that “Morocco has gained everybody’s respect now.”

Elsewhere, Erling Haaland’s winner carried Norway past Côte d’Ivoire and into a meeting with Brazil, while Colombia’s victory over Ghana sets up a tie with Switzerland. Portugal needed a Gonçalo Ramos header and a penalty shootout to eliminate Croatia after Cristiano Ronaldo was substituted.
