Thomas Tuchel has disclosed that he faced significant internal resistance when championing Harry Kane’s transfer to Bayern Munich during his tenure as the German club’s head coach.

Speaking after England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16, the current England manager revealed that securing Kane’s signature in 2023 required him to overcome scepticism within the Bayern hierarchy. “He’s a unique player and personality. I fought the fight to bring him to Bayern Munich, against other opinions,” Tuchel explained.

The move, which saw Kane depart Tottenham after a prolific career in North London, has proven extraordinarily successful for both player and club. The striker has found the net 146 times in just 147 appearances for the Bundesliga champions, establishing himself as one of the most lethal forwards in European football.

Tuchel, who managed Bayern during the 2023-24 season before taking the England reins, believes the transfer represented a crucial developmental step for the 31-year-old. “It was the right step, going into a demanding culture,” he noted. “He plays a very intense game with [Bayern coach] Vincent Kompany which helps him be in the right shape physically. The titles took a huge weight off his shoulders.”

The England boss also praised Kane’s character and commitment to team objectives, observing: “It’s beautiful to see how devoted, what a team player he is.”

Kane’s departure from Tottenham ended a lengthy association with the Premier League side, where he had emerged as the club’s all-time leading scorer. The transfer initially raised questions about how the England captain would adapt to German football, but his goal-scoring record has silenced any doubts.

Under Kompany’s guidance this season, Kane has maintained his exceptional standards. The Belgian coach has implemented a high-intensity tactical approach that Tuchel believes has enhanced the striker’s physical condition and overall contribution.

The striker’s form remains vital to both his club and country. Under Tuchel’s guidance with the national team, Kane continues to serve as the focal point of England’s attacking strategy. His goal and assist against Mexico demonstrated his enduring influence on the international stage.

While Tuchel has since moved on from Bayern, the foundation laid during the Kane transfer continues to benefit the Bavarian giants. The England manager’s insistence on signing Kane, despite the reservations he encountered, stands as a testament to his eye for talent and understanding of what the striker could offer in a new environment.

Kane’s success in Germany may also serve as a reference point for other English players considering moves abroad, demonstrating that leaving the Premier League can accelerate both personal development and trophy accumulation.
