England midfielder Jordan Henderson has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup after breaking his wrist during post-match celebrations. The 34-year-old, who did not feature in the 3-2 last-16 victory over Mexico, fell over an advertising hoarding as the squad celebrated with supporters.
Medical staff rushed to assist Henderson shortly after the final whistle. He was given oxygen and carried off on a stretcher before being taken to hospital, where scans confirmed the fracture.
Manager and teammate react
England head coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed the setback after the match. “Jordan injured his wrist, it just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is not with us,” he said. “I don’t know the procedure, the doctor told me he is in the hospital.”
Midfielder Jude Bellingham told the BBC: “He’s in a bit of bother but our medical team have got everything under control probably. Best not to give too much detail when I don’t know too much what is going on. Everyone was there to support him and even that was a beautiful thing to see.”
Tournament impact
The injury ends Henderson’s participation at what would have been a record-equalling fourth World Cup. By appearing as an 84th-minute substitute against Panama earlier in the tournament, he matched Bobby Charlton’s achievement of playing in four finals between 1958 and 1970.
Henderson, who joined Brentford after leaving Liverpool, had been an unused substitute throughout the knockout preparations. He had earlier received a booking during the Mexico match following a confrontation on the sidelines.
England will now proceed to the quarter-finals without the experienced midfielder, leaving Tuchel to adjust his squad options for the remaining fixtures.
