Neymar has announced his retirement from international duty after completing a unique statistical symmetry: the Brazil forward scored both his first and final goals for his country at MetLife Stadium.

The 33-year-old’s curtain call came during Brazil’s World Cup last-16 exit against Norway, where he converted a consolation penalty to register his 80th international goal on his 130th appearance. That strike bookended a career that began at the same venue on 10 August 2010, when an 18-year-old Neymar thumped a header past Tim Howard in a friendly against the United States.

On that summer evening nearly 16 years ago, more than 77,000 spectators watched the teenager announce his arrival on the international stage. His final contribution came at the same end of the stadium, rolled past Norway’s Ørjan Nyland, before he confirmed his departure from the Seleção.

A rare bookend

While many prolific international scorers have managed to find the net on both their debut and farewell appearances, research suggests none have done so at the same venue. The achievement appears unmatched in the archives of the game’s most prolific international scorers.

France’s Zinedine Zidane found the net on his 1994 debut against the Czech Republic and again in his 2006 World Cup final appearance, though those matches were played in Bordeaux and Berlin respectively. Mexico’s Enrique Borja scored on his debut and final appearance in Mexico City, but at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario and Azteca—approximately 7km apart.

Similarly, Denmark’s Pauli Jørgensen netted on his debut in Aarhus and farewell in Copenhagen, while Poland’s Wlodzimierz Lubanski scored in Chorzów and Szczecin. The Netherlands’ Abe Lenstra found the net in Rotterdam and Amsterdam across a career spanning the 1940s and 1950s.

Brazil’s next chapter

Neymar’s departure leaves a significant void in Brazil’s attacking line as the five-time world champions regroup following their tournament elimination. The forward bows out having recorded 80 goals across 130 caps, with both his opening and closing strikes arriving at the same stadium.

Researchers continue to investigate whether any other player has matched Neymar’s specific achievement of opening and closing their international account at the identical stadium, with suggestions welcomed from the football community.
