VfL Bochum have completed the signing of Danish forward Christian Rasmussen on a free transfer, securing the 23-year-old to a contract running until June 2030.
The move became possible after Fortuna Düsseldorf suffered relegation to Germany’s third division last season, triggering a release clause that allowed Rasmussen to leave without a fee. He had only joined Düsseldorf from Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam twelve months earlier, making this his second German club in as many years.
Rasmussen arrives with significant international youth experience despite his relatively young age. The attacker has represented Denmark at various age-group levels from U-16 through to U-21, accumulating 34 caps and finding the net nine times for his country at youth level.
Bochum praise new arrival’s versatility
Simon Zoller, Bochum’s director of professional football, outlined the qualities the Bundesliga side expect Rasmussen to add to their attacking options. He highlighted the Dane’s pace and directness, noting that he consistently looks to test goalkeepers rather than overcomplicating play.
“Christian brings high pace, a strong drive towards goal, and great determination in the final third,” Zoller said. “He consistently looks for a shot and possesses a very good strike, which means he can always be a threat in front of goal.”
Zoller also emphasised Rasmussen’s tactical flexibility as a key attribute. The forward can operate through the middle or on either wing, offering the coaching staff multiple options in the final third.
“At the same time, his direct style of play fits very well with the way we want to attack, and he is characterized by his versatility,” Zoller added. “He can be deployed both centrally and on either wing, giving us additional options to react to different game situations and to be flexible in our attacking play.”
Long-term project
The six-year deal represents a significant commitment from Bochum, who view the player as a project with room for further development. With no transfer fee involved, the signing carries minimal financial risk while offering substantial potential upside should Rasmussen establish himself in the Bundesliga.
The attacker will hope to make his mark in Germany’s top flight after seeing his previous club drop to the 3. Liga. His immediate challenge will be to break into a Bochum side preparing for the new campaign and fighting to maintain their top-tier status.
