Fenerbahce have reached an agreement with Olympique Marseille to sign Mason Greenwood for €40 million plus €2 million in add-ons, securing the forward’s signature ahead of Serie A rivals Roma. The Turkish club is expected to hand the 24-year-old England international a four-year contract worth approximately €10 million per season, representing one of the most significant deals of the summer window.
The agreement concludes weeks of speculation surrounding Greenwood’s future, with Roma initially appearing favourites to secure his services. Giallorossi coach Gian Piero Gasperini had made no secret of his desire to recruit the forward, identifying him as his first-choice target to reinforce the right side of the trident attack following the club’s qualification for the Champions League.
How Fenerbahce won the race
Despite Roma offering a higher transfer fee in their initial approach, Fenerbahce secured the player’s agreement through a superior wage package. The Turkish side’s financial muscle proved decisive, with their €10 million annual salary offer far exceeding what the Italian club could sanction.
The negotiation process itself broke with convention, as Fenerbahce representatives engaged simultaneously with both Marseille and Manchester United to accelerate the deal. This direct approach helped overcome Marseille’s initial reluctance to sell, with the French club having originally demanded circa €50 million to alleviate serious financial pressures.
United windfall and Marseille concerns
Manchester United will receive €6.4 million from the transfer, pocketing 40 per cent of the profit as stipulated in the €26 million deal that took Greenwood to France last summer. Marseille will retain approximately €35.6 million from the sale.
While Greenwood’s departure ends a productive spell statistically—the forward scored 26 goals and provided 11 assists last season—sources close to the Ligue 1 club suggest directors and staff grew frustrated with his attitude during his single campaign in France. This discord contributed to Marseille’s willingness to sanction the transfer despite his impressive goalscoring return.
Roma’s failure to land their primary target also follows pressure from supporters, with a section of fans having petitioned against the signing due to Greenwood’s history of violence allegations. The forward is now expected to travel to Istanbul to complete medical examinations and finalise his four-year commitment to the Turkish giants.
