SV Werder Bremen have announced the capture of Polish centre-back Oskar Wójcik from KS Cracovia. The 22-year-old defender arrives in the Bundesliga following a breakthrough campaign in the Ekstraklasa and his recent elevation to the Poland senior national team.
Wójcik earned his first senior cap for Poland in May this year, capping an impressive season that has now earned him a move to German football. The transfer represents a significant step in the young defender’s career as he swaps the Polish top flight for the Bundesliga.
Club praise for defensive addition
Clemens Fritz, Werder’s managing director for sport, confirmed the deal and highlighted the player’s progress. “Oskar was one of the standout players in the Polish league last season,” Fritz stated. “We have been following him for some time. We are delighted that the opportunity has now arisen to sign him and that he has decided to become part of the Werder family.”
Head coach Daniel Thioune believes Wójcik possesses the attributes required to succeed in the Bundesliga. “Oskar has made excellent progress and enjoyed a breakthrough season in the Polish Ekstraklasa last year,” Thioune said. “He brings a lot of qualities as a centre-back and can start to play an important role for us straight away.”
International defender ready for challenge
The 22-year-old, who operates primarily as a centre-back, expressed his excitement about the transfer. “I’m simply looking forward to getting started,” Wójcik said. “I’ve already heard so much about the fans and the atmosphere inside the stadium. Now I want to experience it for myself.”
Wójcik suggested the timing of the move suits his development perfectly. “Taking the step into the Bundesliga, and especially joining Werder, feels right,” he explained. “It is the perfect time for me. The conversations with the club hierarchy were very positive, and my first impressions of the club and everyone working here have been excellent.”
The signing strengthens Werder’s defensive ranks as they prepare for the upcoming Bundesliga campaign. Wójcik will compete for a place in Thioune’s backline following his switch from Cracovia.
