South African midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25. The Mamelodi Sundowns player, who featured for Bafana Bafana at the recent 2026 World Cup, was found dead in Cape Town on Saturday morning.
Adams’s body was discovered at a residence in Schotsche Kloof in central Cape Town. Western Cape police have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, though no cause has been officially disclosed.
The midfielder’s passing comes just weeks after he represented South Africa on football’s biggest stage. Adams started in the tournament opener against Mexico and the subsequent draw with Czechia, operating in midfield before being substituted in both fixtures. He later came off the bench during the 1-0 victory over South Korea, though he did not feature in the last-32 defeat to Canada.
From Stellenbosch academy to Bafana Bafana
Adams emerged through Stellenbosch FC’s youth system, becoming the first player from their academy to sign a professional contract with the senior side. During his time at the club, he made 139 appearances and played a key role in their 2023 Carling Knockout triumph. His performances earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he continued to impress until his untimely death.
Football community mourns
South Africa’s minister of sport, Gayton McKenzie, released a statement expressing profound shock. “It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” he said. “South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”
The South African Football Players Union also paid tribute, describing the loss as “immeasurable”. The union highlighted his recent World Cup appearances, noting he had represented the nation with pride and distinction throughout the campaign.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk confirmed that “circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation”. As the football fraternity awaits further details, Adams’s death marks a tragic end to a career that had promised much for both club and country.
