Manchester United are preparing to lodge a formal bid for AS Roma midfielder Manu Koné, with Arsenal also tracking the France international. The Serie A side value the 25-year-old at €55 million, though financial pressures may force them to sell despite securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Koné has elevated his profile significantly at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, establishing himself as an important figure for Les Bleus. He started and impressed in the quarter-final victory over Morocco, capitalising on an injury sustained by Real Madrid‘s Aurélien Tchouaméni. Despite his strong performances in the starting eleven, the Roma midfielder could return to the substitutes’ bench for the semi-final against Spain.
Gasperini confirms financial constraints
Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini has admitted that the club must balance their books this summer, placing Koné’s future in serious doubt. “It is undeniable that Roma have to balance the books,” Gasperini stated when questioned specifically about the Frenchman’s situation.
The Giallorossi secured Champions League qualification, an achievement that typically strengthens a club’s financial position and retention power. However, Gasperini indicated this might not prevent the sale of key assets. He explained: “I hope that reaching the Champions League will be enough, but it is clear that balance sheets are essential for clubs, and there will be more clarity in the coming weeks.”
Premier League interest hardens
United’s interest has progressed beyond the enquiry stage, with an offer expected imminently according to reports from Italy. Arsenal remain active in the race for Koné’s signature, setting up a potential battle between the Premier League rivals for his services.
Roma would ideally keep the midfielder, who has become a central figure since arriving at the Stadio Olimpico. Nevertheless, the €55 million valuation reflects both his growing reputation on the international stage and the club’s urgent need to generate funds. The situation should become clearer once Koné’s World Cup campaign concludes and the summer transfer window gathers pace.
