Paris Saint-Germain have entered into discussions over a potential return for Lucas Digne, with the Aston Villa left-back available for a reported release clause of €10 million.
Talks regarding the 32-year-old French defender are already underway, according to reports. Digne currently holds a contract with the Midlands club until 2028, but his availability at a relatively modest fee has attracted interest from the Ligue 1 champions.
Release clause and role
The proposed fee of around €10m represents a bargain for a player of Digne’s experience. Paris Saint-Germain view the former Barcelona and Everton defender as suitable competition for Nuno Mendes at left-back, offering depth in a key position.
Digne spent three years in the French capital between 2013 and 2016, making 44 appearances during his first spell with the club. A return would mark a homecoming for the Meaux-born international, who began his professional career in Paris before stints at Roma, Barcelona, Everton and eventually Villa Park.
Villa performances
The defender has established himself as a key figure under Unai Emery since arriving at Aston Villa four seasons ago. He played a significant role in the club’s Europa League triumph last season, contributing seven assists across 44 appearances in all competitions.
Despite facing competition from Ian Maatsen for the left-back position, Digne maintained consistent playing time throughout the campaign. His creative output from defence proved valuable, with his seven assists highlighting his continued threat from wide areas.
What happens next
While discussions have reportedly begun, no agreement has been confirmed between the clubs. The presence of a release clause simplifies negotiations, though Aston Villa may be reluctant to lose a senior player who has been integral to their recent success.
For PSG, the move offers an opportunity to add proven quality without a substantial financial outlay. Digne would bring Champions League experience and familiarity with the club’s environment, having previously worn the shirt during his early career.
The coming days will determine whether the Frenchman secures a return to his boyhood club or remains part of Emery’s plans for the new season.
