ESTAC Troyes have secured the services of midfielder Iron Gomis on a free transfer, with the 26-year-old Frenchman penning a two-year contract at the Stade de l’Aube. The deal was formally announced on Thursday.

The move marks a return to French football for the midfielder, who developed through the youth ranks at SC Amiens before pursuing opportunities abroad. Gomis arrives in Champagne having spent last season with Zira FC in the Azerbaijan Premier League, where his contract expired this summer.

Troyes strengthen for Ligue 1 challenge

The signing comes at a crucial juncture for Troyes, who are actively rebuilding their squad ahead of their return to Ligue 1. The club secured promotion and now face the challenge of competing at the highest domestic level.

Managerial priorities have focused on the midfield following the departure of key personnel earlier in the transfer window. Mathys Detourbet completed a permanent transfer to Manchester City before immediately joining AS Monaco on loan, whilst Martin Adeline opted for a move to German second-tier side Hamburg. These exits created gaps in the central areas that the recruitment team have moved to address.

Gomis arrives without a transfer fee, offering an economically sound solution as the club balances its books while seeking to assemble a unit capable of surviving in the top flight.

Well-travelled midfielder returns home

Born in 1999, Gomis emerged through the esteemed youth system at SC Amiens, where he learnt his trade before stepping into senior football. His career path has since wound through multiple leagues, providing him with exposure to different tactical approaches and competitive environments.

Following his initial steps in France with USL Dunkerque, the midfielder crossed into Turkey to represent Kasimpasa in the Süper Lig. He subsequently sampled Italian football with Salernitana before making the switch to Azerbaijan and Zira FC.

Now back on French soil, Gomis will aim to translate his continental experience into consistent performances at Ligue 1 level. His versatility across midfield roles could prove valuable as Troyes navigate the demands of the forthcoming campaign, with the player expected to integrate into the squad immediately as pre-season preparations continue.
