Ghana international Alidu Seidu has officially completed a loan move to OGC Nice from fellow Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais. The transfer, confirmed by Nice, is a ‘joker’ deal, a special provision in French football rules that allows clubs to sign players outside the traditional transfer windows under specific circumstances.
The 26-year-old defender’s arrival at Nice was made possible due to a severe injury within the club’s squad. Antoine Mendy suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a recent match against Le Mans, creating the necessary condition for Nice to utilise the ‘joker’ rule and bring in a replacement.
Seidu joins Nice on a straight loan agreement, which notably does not include an option for the club to make the move permanent at the end of the current campaign. His versatility is expected to be a key asset for Nice manager Olivier Pantaloni, as Seidu is capable of playing across multiple defensive positions, including right-back, right wing-back, and centre-back.
Speaking ahead of Seidu’s move, Olivier Pantaloni highlighted the club’s assessment of the player. “We did our research on him and his footballing qualities. He can play in multiple positions,” Pantaloni stated. The manager also praised Seidu’s character, adding, “we also had excellent feedback on his mindset. Despite his young age, he can be a leader in the dressing room. We really need that.”
Seidu’s move provides crucial defensive reinforcement for OGC Nice as they navigate the season, particularly in light of Mendy’s long-term absence. His experience as a Ghana international is also expected to contribute to the team’s depth and performance.
