Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies is fit to start Canada’s World Cup Round of 32 tie against South Africa, marking his first appearance of the tournament after injury kept him out during the group stages.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch confirmed the 24-year-old is available for the knockout clash following a careful rehabilitation process. “Now he’s truly available. We have Alphonso back and healthy and ready to perform,” Marsch stated. “I think it’s a big moment for the team and a big boost for the team.”
Davies had been sidelined with injury throughout the group phase, forcing him to watch from the bench as Canada navigated the opening rounds. Marsch admitted that informing his star player he would miss the early matches was difficult, describing Davies as “our best player” and “a huge piece of everything that we do.” The coach explained that the cautious approach was taken in the best interests of the defender’s career and long-term fitness.
The Bayern star revealed he had asked Marsch for playing time during the final group fixture. “I went to the coach before the game and asked him, ‘Do you think I can get…'” Davies recalled, though the request was denied. Marsch could have risked him, but Davies noted that his coach “cares about me and the team,” acknowledging that the decision to prioritise his wellbeing proved correct.
Davies described the emotional toll of his enforced absence. “Obviously, it was painful,” he said regarding watching the first three games. He stressed his passion for the sport, explaining that remaining on the sidelines was particularly frustrating when he felt ready to contribute.
His return significantly strengthens Canada’s attacking options from defence. Marsch labelled Davies a “big X factor” who alters the team’s potential in the competition. The coach believes the wing-back’s confidence and ability will prove decisive as Canada aim to advance.
Canada now prepare to face South Africa with their key defender restored to the starting line-up. Davies’ availability provides a major tactical advantage as the side bids to progress beyond the opening knockout round.
