Andrea Pirlo’s prospects of becoming Italy head coach face a serious legal obstacle after consumer group Codacons threatened court action to block his appointment. The agency objects to the former midfielder’s sponsorship deal with Fonbet, a Russian bookmaker subject to Italian sanctions.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has reportedly delayed confirming Pirlo as the new Azzurri boss following scrutiny of his commercial ties. What appeared to be a straightforward appointment 48 hours ago has unravelled amid concerns over his role as global ambassador for the betting company.
Legal Challenge Over Sanctioned Ties
Codacons announced it will request an investigation by Italy’s Communications Authority into alleged breaches of Article 9 of the Dignity Decree, which bans advertising and sponsorship of gambling with cash winnings. The group also plans to appeal to the Lazio TAR administrative court if the FIGC proceeds with the appointment.
“The Codacons will present a formal request to the Communications Authority tomorrow asking to open an investigation into Andrea Pirlo in light of the violation of the rules prohibiting sponsorship for gambling,” the agency stated. It warned: “If the FIGC names him coach of the Nazionale, an immediate appeal will be lodged to the Lazio TAR tribunal to block this nomination.”
Should the authority uphold the complaint, Pirlo faces a fine worth 20 per cent of his sponsorship value. The controversy is heightened by Fonbet’s Russian ownership, which falls under specific sanctions, particularly after Pirlo attended a recent company event in Moscow.
Broader Implications
Pirlo is not alone among Italy’s 2006 World Cup winners in holding Russian commercial deals; former teammates Francesco Totti and Marco Materazzi have also participated in similar events. However, Pirlo is the only one currently in line for the national team post.
The development places FIGC President Giovanni Malagò under pressure to either sever ties with Pirlo or risk protracted legal battles that could destabilise the coaching position ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
