AS Monaco chief executive Thiago Scuro has firmly dismissed any prospect of Vanderson leaving the Ligue 1 side this summer, insisting the Brazil international remains central to the club’s plans despite an injury-disrupted campaign.
Scuro draws distinction with Caio Henrique exit
Speaking at a press conference in La Turbie on Wednesday, Scuro drew a clear distinction between Vanderson’s situation and that of compatriot Caio Henrique, who completed a move to Ajax earlier this summer. While the club sanctioned Henrique’s departure, Scuro made clear that Vanderson is categorically not for sale.
“There is the plan and then what can happen during the summer. Vanderson had a lot of problems last season,” Scuro explained. “But his situation is different from Caio’s, both in terms of age and length of contract. For us, Vanderson should stay. The plan is for him to stay.”
Injury struggles limit international opportunities
The 25-year-old’s retention represents a statement of faith from the Principality club despite fitness concerns that have limited his progress since arriving from Gremio in January 2022. Last season, Vanderson managed just 23 appearances across all competitions as injuries disrupted his rhythm, with the setbacks ultimately costing him a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the FIFA World Cup.
Vanderson has earned seven caps for the Seleção but missed the tournament following his frustrating domestic campaign. His compatriot Caio Henrique has already left Monaco to join Ajax this summer, yet Scuro’s comments confirm Vanderson remains integral to their long-term strategy.
The Brazilian initially made a strong impression after joining from Gremio, but his development has stalled amid persistent physical setbacks. Monaco’s decision to retain him suggests they believe the player can rediscover his best form once fully fit, with the club showing patience as they look to stabilise their squad ahead of the new season.
