Atalanta have reportedly reached an agreement with Cagliari to sign midfielder Gianluca Gaetano for an initial €11 million, with performance-related bonuses potentially adding another €4 million to the transfer fee. According to Sky Sport Italia, personal terms have already been settled between the Bergamo club and the 26-year-old, while final contractual details are being concluded ahead of a proposed medical examination within the next 24 hours.

Sarri secures primary target

The midfielder was specifically requested by new Atalanta head coach Maurizio Sarri, who is reshaping the squad following his recent appointment at the Gewiss Stadium. Gaetano is expected to slot directly into the engine room as a replacement for Ederson, with the Brazilian poised to complete a transfer to Manchester United this summer.

Last season, Gaetano contributed three goals and four assists across 35 competitive appearances for the Sardinian side. His performances have evidently convinced the Atalanta hierarchy to meet Cagliari’s valuation, which closely matches the €15 million asking price initially set by the island club.

From Napoli academy to Bergamo

A product of the Napoli youth system, Gaetano gained valuable Serie A experience through loan spells at Cremonese and Cagliari before making his move to Sardinia permanent in 2025. Cagliari paid €6.2 million to secure his signature on a full-time basis last year, meaning the club stand to nearly double their investment should all bonus clauses be triggered by the Dea.

The proposed transfer represents a significant step in Gaetano’s career, offering him the opportunity to work under a tactician who specifically identified him as the ideal profile to refresh Atalanta’s midfield options ahead of the new campaign.

Deal timeline

While the framework of the transfer is in place, the move remains subject to the completion of medical assessments and the finalisation of paperwork. Should these formalities proceed without complication, Gaetano could be unveiled as an Atalanta player before the weekend, providing Sarri with additional depth in the centre of the park as pre-season preparations intensify.
