Atletico Madrid have entered advanced negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over the transfer of South Korean midfielder Kang-in Lee, marking a significant shift from the French club’s refusal to discuss a move during the January window.
The development represents a priority target for Los Colchoneros as they seek to rebuild their midfield this summer. Lee, 25, joined PSG from Mallorca in 2023 but has struggled for consistent playing time amid a crowded attacking midfield roster at the Parc des Princes.
Valuation Gap and Previous Block
PSG previously rejected all approaches for Lee in January, with reports at the time suggesting the Parisian hierarchy informed Atletico that there would be no negotiations in the short term. The club also explored extending Lee’s contract during the winter to protect his market value.
Financial terms remain the primary obstacle. Atletico’s initial valuation sits around €25 million, though some reports suggest PSG are demanding figures closer to €35–40 million for the player, who is considered to be in his prime years.
Tactical Fit and Parallel Negotiations
Lee offers qualities Simeone’s side has lacked since the departures of key creative players. Technically gifted and comfortable operating as an advanced number eight or a ten, he combines pressing intensity with set-piece quality and the ability to navigate tight spaces. His previous spell at Mallorca means he already understands La Liga’s rhythms, reducing adaptation risk.
The pursuit forms part of a broader recruitment drive. Atletico are simultaneously negotiating with Manchester City for a midfielder and with Bayer Leverkusen for left-back Alejandro Grimaldo. Director Mateu Alemany is targeting multiple profiles to address the team’s creativity deficit in central areas.
Should the transfer proceed, Lee would provide Simeone with a dynamic option between the lines, filling a void that has persisted since João Félix’s exit and the gradual evolution of Koke’s role. The South Korean international is understood to be open to returning to Spain, where his technical profile would likely receive greater prominence than in Paris.
