AZ Alkmaar are set to sign Italian defender Andrea Natali on a permanent basis from Bayer Leverkusen. The Eredivisie club have reached full agreement with the Bundesliga champions over a deal that could eventually be worth €3 million including performance-related bonuses.
The 18-year-old centre-back joined Alkmaar on loan from Leverkusen and has featured for the club’s youth teams, including appearances in the UEFA Youth League. The permanent switch represents a significant step in the young defender’s career as he looks to establish himself in senior football.
From Barcelona to the Netherlands
Natali’s career path has already crossed several borders. The Italy U19 international initially joined Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer from FC Barcelona two years ago. His move to Germany came shortly after he played a crucial role in Italy’s U17 European Championship victory, where the Azzurri’s defence conceded only two goals throughout the tournament.
Despite his potential, Natali has yet to break into Leverkusen’s senior side, leading to his temporary move to Alkmaar. During his time in the Netherlands, he has continued his development within the club’s youth structure rather than the first team.
Transfer Structure and Competing Interest
The financial arrangement includes a notable clause protecting Leverkusen’s future interests. The German club will retain 25 per cent of any profit Alkmaar make from a future sale of the player.
Natali’s performances attracted interest beyond the Netherlands. Several Italian clubs and Premier League side Brighton were reportedly monitoring his situation. However, the defender has opted to remain in the Netherlands and continue his development with Alkmaar.
The transfer is expected to be finalised shortly, with all parties having reached comprehensive agreement on the terms.
