Bayer Leverkusen have sent Germany U19 international Luca Erlein on loan to Energie Cottbus for the 2026/27 campaign, just days after securing his signature from TSG Hoffenheim.
The right-back completed a €2 million transfer to the BayArena earlier this week. However, rather than integrating him into the senior squad immediately, the Bundesliga club have opted to loan him to the newly-promoted 2. Bundesliga side to gain valuable match experience.
Energie Cottbus secured their return to the second tier after a decade away, having last competed in the 2. Bundesliga in 2014. The club from Brandenburg have been active in the transfer market ahead of their comeback season, adding experienced midfielder Leonardo Bittencourt, Christian Kinsombi, Lucas Copado and goalkeeper Marcel Lotka to their ranks.
Development Path
Erlein follows a similar path to fellow Germany U19 international Francis Onyeka, who has also departed Leverkusen on a temporary basis. Onyeka, who spent time on loan at VfL Bochum, will spend the upcoming season with SV Elversberg, another side that earned promotion to the second division.
The loan strategy reflects Leverkusen’s approach to developing young talent. By placing Erlein in a competitive 2. Bundesliga environment, the club hopes the defender will accumulate senior minutes before making the step up to the top flight.
Erlein established himself as one of Germany’s promising full-backs during his time at Hoffenheim, earning recognition at U19 level for the national team. His move to Leverkusen was seen as a significant step in his development, though the immediate loan indicates the club view him as a long-term project requiring seasoning at a lower level.
Cottbus will provide a testing ground for the young player. The club’s return to the second tier has prompted significant squad investment, and Erlein will compete for a starting role in a team preparing for its first second-division campaign in ten years.
The arrangement benefits all parties: Leverkusen retain control of a player they invested €2 million in, Erlein gains regular football at a professional level, and Cottbus secure a talented defender with international pedigree as they aim to establish themselves back in the second tier.
