Atalanta are preparing to send central defender Ben Godfrey to Glasgow Rangers on a temporary basis, with the Scottish club holding an option to make the transfer permanent. The 26-year-old has failed to establish himself in Italy since joining the Bergamo club last year.
According to Sky Sport Italia and the Daily Record, the Serie A side expect to complete the loan move shortly. The arrangement would include a clause allowing Rangers to buy the player outright at the end of the campaign.
Struggles in Serie A
Godfrey joined Atalanta from Everton in 2024 for a reported fee of €12.5 million. However, the defender has endured a difficult spell in Bergamo, managing only five competitive appearances totalling 93 minutes of playing time.
The former Norwich City youth player won two caps for the England senior side in 2021 but has seen his career stall due to limited opportunities and significant injury setbacks. In 2022, he sustained serious injuries including a fractured leg and knee ligament damage during his time at Everton.
Wandering career
This would mark Godfrey’s fourth loan spell away from a parent club. He previously gained experience at Ipswich Town and Sheffield United in the English Football League, and spent the last six months on loan at Danish side Brøndby.
The centre-back will hope to revive his fortunes in Scotland should the move to Rangers be finalised. The loan arrangement offers the Glasgow club flexibility to assess the player before deciding whether to activate the purchase option.
