Former AC Milan star Zvonimir Boban has spoken out in defence of Paolo Maldini’s short spell as Italy‘s technical director, insisting that Maldini did not betray any agreements with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) during the search for a new national team coach.
Maldini’s tenure as technical director lasted barely two weeks earlier this summer. Alongside his advisor Leonardo, Maldini’s primary task was to identify and secure a new coach for the Azzurri. Their initial targets for the prestigious role were high-profile managers Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola.
Guardiola’s Decision and Pirlo’s Near Miss
Efforts to convince Pep Guardiola to take the Italy coaching position were ultimately unsuccessful. Boban explained that Guardiola declined the role, suggesting the Manchester City manager might find it frustrating not to be involved in daily pitch work. Despite the refusal, Boban highlighted Guardiola’s immense respect for Maldini, stating, “I know Guardiola has enormous respect for Maldini, but he understood it wasn’t the right time.”
Following Guardiola’s decision, Maldini turned to Andrea Pirlo, who had agreed terms to become the new Italy coach. However, Pirlo’s appointment was ultimately blocked due to a political scandal. This controversy reportedly stemmed from Pirlo’s role as a brand ambassador for a Russian betting company.
Maldini’s Integrity Upheld
Boban firmly believes that Maldini acted with integrity throughout the process. He stated that Maldini did not betray agreements with the FIGC, implying that any issues arose from external factors rather than Maldini’s conduct. Boban’s comments underscore his view that a director makes choices and takes responsibility for them, and in this instance, Maldini’s actions were not at fault.
