Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the arrival of Japan Under-19 international Takato Yamamoto. The 18-year-old central midfielder joins the Bundesliga club on a temporary basis from Gamba Osaka.
The German side have secured the teenager’s services on an initial 12-month loan agreement. Upon his arrival in North Rhine-Westphalia, Yamamoto will integrate with the club’s under-23 development squad rather than the senior first team, allowing him time to adjust to the demands of European football.
Borussia Dortmund academy director Paul Schaffran endorsed the move, highlighting the player’s potential fit within the club’s system. “Takato is a player who impressed us right from the start,” Schaffran said. “He brings exactly the qualities we want to see in our style of play. We’re confident that he’ll take the next step in his development with us.”
For Yamamoto, the transfer represents a significant personal and professional transition. The midfielder has never previously played outside Japan, a fact he acknowledged while expressing his determination to grasp the opportunity.
“I still can hardly believe it. Borussia Dortmund – such a great club. It is the first time I have left Japan, everything here is new to me. But I am ready,” Yamamoto explained. “I want to learn every day and get better. And I will give everything to repay this trust.”
The youngster will spend the upcoming campaign with the reserves as he adapts to new surroundings. His parent club, Gamba Osaka, approved the move to aid the teenager’s development pathway.
