Brighton hold discussions in Milan
Brighton have expressed interest in signing Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor. Representatives from the Premier League club travelled to Milan recently for a series of meetings where the possibility of acquiring the Italy U21 international was discussed, according to reports from Italian broadcaster Sky Sport.
However, no formal negotiations have commenced between the clubs. The Seagulls face a significant challenge in convincing Atalanta to part with the teenager, who only joined the Bergamo club last summer and has established himself as a regular starter.
Who is Honest Ahanor?
Ahanor is an 18-year-old centre-back who has quickly risen through the ranks in Italian football. Atalanta invested €20 million to sign him from Genoa in the previous transfer window, a fee that established him as the second-priciest Italian 17-year-old ever.
The defender repaid that faith during the 2025-26 campaign, making 35 appearances across all competitions. He started 22 matches in Serie A and featured in nine Champions League fixtures, demonstrating his capability at the highest level despite his youth.
Currently committed to Atalanta until the summer of 2028, Ahanor has represented Italy at under-21 level and is considered one of the most promising defensive prospects in the country.
Atalanta’s strong negotiating position
The Serie A club are under no financial pressure to sanction Ahanor’s departure. They have already secured over €100 million from other sales this summer, with centre-back Marco Palestra set to join Chelsea for €60 million and midfielder Ederson moving to Manchester United for €45 million.
With these substantial fees incoming and Ahanor tied to a long-term contract, Atalanta can demand a premium price for any potential sale. The Italian side view the young defender as part of their future core rather than a player they need to monetise.
What happens next
Brighton’s interest remains at a preliminary stage. While the meetings in Milan indicate serious intent, the Premier League club have yet to table a formal bid or enter structured negotiations.
Should Brighton wish to proceed, they will likely need to submit an offer significantly above the €20 million Atalanta paid last summer. Given the player’s rapid development, extended contract terms and the club’s comfortable financial position, any potential transfer would require a substantial financial commitment from the English side.
For now, Ahanor appears set to remain in Bergamo unless Brighton or another interested party meets Atalanta’s valuation.
