Bruno Guimarães has informed Newcastle United of his desire to join Arsenal this summer, placing the Premier League champions on high alert for a major midfield addition. The Brazil international, who missed a penalty during his country’s recent World Cup last-16 defeat to Norway, has reportedly made up his mind after the Gunners held talks with his representatives last month.

Newcastle’s Resolve Tested

Although Arsenal are yet to contact the north-east club officially, they are believed to be preparing a bid in the region of £60 million. Yet persuading Newcastle to part with their captain promises to be difficult. The Magpies have already sanctioned the sales of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham this summer, and they are determined to avoid another high-profile departure.

Guimarães remains under contract for two more years, with an option for an additional twelve months, which strengthens Newcastle’s negotiating position. The club are keen to prevent a repeat of last summer’s protracted saga that eventually saw Alexander Isak join Liverpool. To offset these departures, they plan to sign Sean Steur from Ajax as a replacement for Tonali.

Arteta’s Midfield Plans

Manager Mikel Arteta views reinforcements in central areas as a priority, partly due to concerns over Declan Rice’s long-term fitness. Should a deal for Guimarães prove impossible, Arsenal have identified alternatives including Ayyoub Bouaddi of Lille and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. Christian Nørgaard, who managed just one Premier League start last term following his arrival from Brentford, could be permitted to leave.

The north London club are also looking to strengthen their attack. Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers has emerged as their primary target, though the Midlands club reportedly want in excess of £100 million. Atlético Madrid’s Julián Alvarez represents another option, although the Argentina forward favours a move to Barcelona and carries a £130 million valuation.

Outgoing Business

Arsenal’s squad is set for several departures this summer. Leandro Trossard is expected to complete a £17 million transfer to Besiktas, while goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is hoping to secure a move to Italy or Spain in search of regular first-team football. The club have already lined up former Leeds stopper Islan Meslier on a free transfer, though it remains unclear whether he will serve as David Raya’s deputy next season.
