Colombia and Portugal have confirmed their starting line-ups for this World Cup 2026 group stage encounter. Néstor Lorenzo has reshuffled his defence and attack, while Roberto Martínez makes a single alteration to the side that faced Uzbekistan.

Colombia ring the changes

The South Americans have adjusted their starting eleven in three positions following their opening fixtures. Jhon Córdoba leads the attack in place of Luis Suárez, while the full-back berths see fresh faces.

Santiago Arias replaces Daniel Muñoz on the right, with Johan Machado coming in for Frank Fabra Mojica on the opposite flank. Muñoz and Mojica had both started Colombia’s previous two matches, though Mojica’s accumulation of a yellow card contributes to his omission as the coaching staff manage suspension risk ahead of potential knockout fixtures.

Despite being the only Colombian player to have scored twice in the tournament thus far, Crystal Palace defender Muñoz begins among the substitutes. Club colleague Jefferson Lerma retains his place in midfield after featuring for the full 180 minutes across the previous games, underscoring his stamina and importance to Lorenzo’s system.

Portugal adjustment

Martínez has handed a start to Rúben Neves in the centre of the park, with João Neves making way despite featuring from the outset against Uzbekistan. The Portuguese federation notes that the pair are not related, clarifying that the shared surname is coincidental.

Cristiano Ronaldo captains the side and starts as the focal point of the attack. The forward is supported by an attacking trio of João Félix, Bruno Fernandes and Pedro Neto, with Vitinha partnering Rúben Neves in central midfield. Diogo Costa starts in goal, shielded by defenders Nuno Mendes, Gonçalo Veiga, Rúben Dias and João Cancelo.

Experience in the ranks

James Rodríguez once again features for Colombia, operating in an advanced role. The Minnesota United midfielder claimed the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup before securing a high-profile transfer to Real Madrid, though he has lost some of the form that defined that tournament.

Both sides will view this fixture as crucial for progression beyond the group phase. The result could prove decisive in determining who advances to the knockout rounds of the expanded tournament.

Colombia starting XI: Vargas; Machado, Lucumí, Sánchez, S. Arias; J. Arias, Lerma, Puerta; Díaz, Córdoba, Rodríguez.

Portugal starting XI: Costa; Mendes, Veiga, Dias, Cancelo; Vitinha, R. Neves; Félix, Fernandes, Neto; Ronaldo.
