Chivu Previews Crucial Champions League Tie
Inter manager Cristian Chivu has confirmed that his side will make squad changes as they prepare to host Club Brugge in a crucial Champions League fixture. The Nerazzurri are looking to secure their first points in the competition after an opening 2-1 defeat away to Real Madrid in September.
Speaking ahead of the match, Chivu stressed the demanding nature of the Champions League, stating that there is no guaranteed formula for success. “Money can’t buy you the Champions League,” he remarked, adding that “there are no players or coaches who give you that guarantee. You need to have the courage, but the work you put in is the most important thing.” He also highlighted the club’s ambition, noting that while winning the competition is a dream, it is their responsibility to strive for such a goal by doing a good job.
Squad Updates and Opponent Form
Chivu provided updates on player availability, confirming that both Hakan Calhanoglu and Djed Spence are fit and ready for selection. Calhanoglu “is doing fine” after his recent match against Parma, while Spence has significantly improved his condition, having completed a week of training and played 25 minutes in a recent game. The manager expressed satisfaction that Spence is overcoming early-season physical issues, with playing time boosting his confidence.
The Inter boss also took time to praise defender Alessandro Bastoni, describing him as a vital asset for both Inter and the Italian national team. Chivu stated that Bastoni “doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone” and has consistently performed at a high level, underscoring his importance to the squad.
Inter will face a Club Brugge side that has shown strong domestic form, winning seven of their first eight matches in the Belgian Pro League. However, like Inter, they also began their Champions League campaign with a loss, falling 3-2 at home to Aston Villa. Chivu acknowledged the challenge, stating, “We don’t underestimate anyone.”
Inter’s Approach and Ambition
Chivu outlined his team’s approach, emphasising a desire to “dominate” with a sense of responsibility and the right attitude, while also aiming to “have fun.” He reiterated that squad rotation is not about having ‘first and second choices’ but about managing energy levels and adapting to opponents, especially with matches scheduled every three days. He considers various factors, including the mental aspect and the condition of players returning from international duty.
The manager also praised the impact of substitutes, noting their ability to “make the difference” in recent games against Monza and Napoli. He highlighted the high level of competition within the squad, which he believes raises both training standards and the team’s overall ambitions. Chivu concluded by stressing the importance of team unity, stating that the group is “rowing in the same direction” and needs energy for a long season.
Despite the initial setback against Real Madrid, Chivu maintained a focus on the immediate challenge. “We’ll take it game by game,” he said, adding, “The most important game is tomorrow’s.” He expects to face a “proactive team that wants to attack with numbers” in Club Brugge, but assured that Inter are “aware of that.”
