Former Roma head coach Daniele De Rossi is reportedly keen to reunite with striker Artem Dovbyk at Genoa, though significant obstacles stand in the way of any potential deal. Representatives from both clubs have been in contact regarding the Ukrainian forward, yet his wage demands and Roma’s sales strategy present major hurdles.

The Salary Stumbling Block

According to Sky Sport Italia and TMW, Dovbyk’s earnings of €3.5 million per season are deemed too costly for Genoa. The Ligurian side would require Roma to subsidise the wages to make the move feasible. This financial constraint complicates De Rossi’s hopes of bringing the 29-year-old to Marassi for the 2026-27 campaign.

Roma’s Preferred Exit Route

While the Giallorossi are actively looking to move Dovbyk on, Italian reports suggest they favour an outright sale to a foreign club rather than a domestic transfer. Turkish outfit Trabzonspor has emerged as an alternative destination. The capital club are reluctant to sanction a loan with an option to buy, preferring a permanent departure to generate funds for incoming recruits.

Dovbyk’s Mixed Spell in the Capital

Dovbyk arrived at the Stadio Olimpico in the summer of 2024 for €30.5 million plus add-ons. He registered 12 goals from 32 league appearances during his debut season, offering a respectable return for the Ukraine international. However, his second campaign was disrupted by fitness issues, restricting him to just three league starts throughout 2025-26.

The striker remains under contract until the summer of 2029, giving Roma leverage in negotiations as they seek to reshape their squad.

Why Roma Are Looking Elsewhere

The potential arrival of Mason Greenwood from Marseille could hasten Dovbyk’s departure, with the Ligue 1 outfit reportedly demanding €50 million. Meanwhile, Donyell Malen impressed during the second half of 2025-26, scoring 14 goals in 18 appearances, while Niccolo Tresoldi has also been linked with a move—though any arrival depends on Dovbyk leaving first.

With Genoa unable to meet Dovbyk’s salary requirements without assistance, and Roma prioritising a sale abroad, the striker’s future appears increasingly likely to lie away from Serie A.
