Dickson Abiyama has completed a permanent transfer to Rot-Weiss Essen from Kaiserslautern, signing a two-year contract with an option for a third season. The Nigerian striker returns to the 3. Liga club after an impressive loan spell that yielded six goals and four assists in just 14 appearances.
Abiyama proved instrumental in Essen’s late surge toward promotion during the second half of the campaign. His attacking output helped secure a playoff spot, though the club ultimately fell short against Greuther Fürth—the team where Abiyama previously enjoyed his career highlight.
From promotion hero to Bundesliga struggle
The forward played a role in Greuther Fürth’s fairytale promotion to the Bundesliga in 2021. However, the step up to Germany’s top flight exposed his limitations; Abiyama failed to score in 24 appearances as the Bavarians were immediately relegated.
His subsequent permanent transfer to Kaiserslautern brought continued frustration. Across 30 appearances for the club, the striker was unable to find the net, leading to loan spells that would ultimately salvage his career trajectory.
Third-tier redemption
Abiyama’s productivity returned during temporary stints at 1860 Munich and most recently Essen, where his goal involvement rate of better than one per game demonstrated his effectiveness at this level. Rot-Weiss Essen have now moved to secure his services permanently as they aim to mount another promotion challenge.
The club have structured the deal to retain long-term flexibility, with the option to extend the contract into a third year should the partnership continue to prove productive.
