Former RC Lens manager Dino Toppmoller has revealed his profound shock and disappointment following his departure from the French club last month. Toppmoller, who left by mutual consent, described his exit as “a big disappointment and a shock” and stated he was “stunned” by the decision.
Speaking on the Spielmacher von 360Media podcast, Toppmoller revisited the circumstances surrounding his brief tenure. He had managed Lens for just six official games, a period that included some notable successes. Toppmoller led the team to a victory over French giants Paris Saint-Germain in the Trophée des Champions, a significant early achievement. He also guided Lens to a win in their UEFA Champions League opener against Slavia Prague, marking a strong start in Europe’s premier club competition.
The Club’s Restructuring and Coaching Staff
RC Lens officially cited “restructuring plans” as the reason for Toppmoller’s departure, explaining that the German did not share the same vision as the club’s executives on this matter. However, reports indicate that a key factor in the decision was the club’s desire to offload one of Toppmoller’s two assistants, Nelson Morgado.
Toppmoller himself alluded to this internal conflict, stating that being “confronted by the fact that, if your assistant remained an assistant, you yourself were sacked, was a blow.” He further offered insight into the club’s perspective on Morgado, noting that his assistant was considered “too demanding, too loud, [and] in conflict with too many people.” This difference in opinion regarding his coaching staff ultimately led to the mutual decision to part ways.
Interim Leadership and Future Outlook
During his short spell, Toppmoller also oversaw four games in Ligue 1, securing one win. At the time of his departure, Lens were sitting in 10th position in the league table. Following his exit, RC Lens swiftly appointed Yannick Cahuzac as interim manager. Cahuzac was promoted from his previous role as an assistant within the club, tasked with stabilising the team and navigating the remainder of the season.
