Egypt coach Hossam Hassan has accepted an apology from Dallas police following a confrontation at the team hotel, declaring the matter resolved after guiding his country to a historic World Cup victory over Australia.

The incident occurred on Thursday when Hassan and team director Ibrahim Hassan became involved in a dispute with officers at the squad’s Dallas hotel. Video footage circulated on social media showed the pair arguing with police, apparently regarding a player preparing to take a photograph with a young supporter in the lobby.

Dallas police stated that officers were responding to a request from hotel security regarding an individual attempting to gain access without event credentials. The force confirmed the issue was resolved at the scene and that officials subsequently met with Egyptian representatives to address their concerns.

Speaking through a translator, Hassan confirmed the team had accepted the apology. “We are really happy to be here at this tournament and we are satisfied with the security personnel that are accompanying us,” he said. “I would like to point to the high-level organization we have with us and the level of security we have with us.”

Flag celebration

The resolution came after Egypt secured their first-ever World Cup knockout stage victory, defeating Australia in the round of 32 on Friday. Hassan, who is the first person both to play for and coach Egypt at the tournament, celebrated by waving a Palestinian flag on the pitch.

“My heart and soul are with them,” Hassan said in a post-match interview. He dedicated the victory to the “good and noble” Egyptian and Palestinian people.

FIFA confirmed that no action would be taken regarding the flag display. “Flags representing all 211 Fifa member associations are permitted at Fifa tournaments,” a spokesperson said. Palestine is a member association of the global governing body.

Yahia Qalash, former head of Egypt’s Journalists’ Union, described the scene as significant. “It was the most significant scene,” he said. “It was a telling scene in an exceptional moment.”

Historical achievement

The victory marks a milestone for Egyptian football, with Hassan achieving the unique distinction of representing the Pharaohs as both player and coach on football’s biggest stage. The result secures Egypt’s progression to the next phase of the competition.
