Manchester City coach Enzo Maresca has commented on Alberto Gilardino’s recent appointment as the new head coach of Italian club Parma. Maresca, who maintains strong personal ties to Parma, expressed his hopes for Gilardino’s success at the Serie A side.
Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, as reported by ParmaLive, Maresca acknowledged his close relationship with Gilardino. “We have a friendship that binds us and goes beyond football. This summer we were on holiday together for a few days with our wives,” Maresca revealed, underscoring their personal connection.
Maresca also explained his continued interest in Parma, even from Manchester. “I hope he does well for himself and for Parma, who I follow even from Manchester. My daughter was born there, so part of us loves Parma and Parma Calcio.” Regarding Gilardino’s suitability for the role, Maresca offered a cautious but supportive view: “Alberto is a good coach. Whether he’s the right man for Parma, only time will tell. I sincerely hope for his sake that he is.”
Parma’s Coaching Change
Gilardino steps into the managerial role at Parma following the departure of Carlos Cuesta. Cuesta’s exit on Sunday was reportedly due to a disagreement with the club’s hierarchy over the direction of the sporting project, rather than a result of on-field performance.
Parma moved swiftly to secure a replacement, with reports indicating direct contact with Gilardino within hours of Cuesta’s departure. Before settling on Gilardino, the club also considered other candidates for the position. These included Roberto D’Aversa, Paolo Zanetti, and former Napoli coach Francesco Calzona, whose agent was reportedly contacted during the search process.
