Lille OSC midfielder Ethan Mbappé is facing a potential ban of up to five matches in the UEFA Champions League following his straight red card during the recent 3-2 loss to Real Betis. The incident, which occurred in the 56th minute of the fixture, has put the 19-year-old at risk of missing a significant portion of Lille’s European campaign.
Mbappé’s Red Card Incident
The red card was issued after Mbappé was seen raising his arm into the face of Real Betis player Natan. Although initially missed by the on-field referee, the action was reviewed and confirmed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), leading to his dismissal. This occurred shortly after Real Betis had scored their third goal, which ultimately proved to be the decisive one in the match.
Potential Sanctions and Impact
UEFA’s Disciplinary Committee is set to review the incident. While a three-game ban is a possibility, reports suggest that if the act is deemed “severe aggression,” Mbappé could face a more extensive five-game suspension. Regardless of the final decision, he is confirmed to miss Lille’s next Champions League fixture against Arsenal. A five-game ban would mean he would be unavailable for half of Lille’s League Phase matches in the competition.
The verdict from UEFA is anticipated before the end of September. Mbappé, a product of the Paris Saint-Germain academy, is the younger brother of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé. His absence could pose a challenge for Lille as they navigate their Champions League group stage fixtures.
