Feyenoord are progressing in negotiations to secure the signature of Hertha BSC goalkeeper Tjark Ernst, with the Dutch side currently leading the chase for the 23-year-old. The German shot-stopper looks increasingly likely to depart the Berlin club during the current transfer window.

According to reports, the Rotterdam-based club have moved ahead of Scottish champions Celtic and Bundesliga outfit VfL Wolfsburg in the race to sign Ernst. While both clubs maintain an interest in the goalkeeper, Feyenoord appear best positioned to complete a deal.

Contract situation and release clause

Ernst is under contract with Hertha until 2027, having established himself as a key figure for the 2. Bundesliga side. However, his deal contains a reported release clause of €5 million, making him an accessible target for clubs seeking to strengthen their options between the posts.

The Berlin-based club face a challenge in retaining established talents whilst competing in Germany’s second tier. Ernst’s potential departure would create a significant gap in their squad, though the clause provides a clear pathway for his exit should an interested party trigger it.

Competition for the keeper’s services

Celtic have monitored Ernst’s situation as they look to bolster their goalkeeping department. The Scottish Premiership winners view the 23-year-old as a potential addition to their squad. Meanwhile, Wolfsburg consider the German as either backup or competition for their current first-choice.

Despite this interest from the British and German markets, Feyenoord’s progress in talks has placed them at the front of the queue. The Eredivisie side are working to finalise terms before the transfer window closes.

The release clause of €5 million means the financial terms are already established, potentially allowing for a swift conclusion once personal terms are agreed. With three years remaining on his Hertha contract, the Berlin club are under no pressure to sell below this valuation, though Ernst appears set to leave this summer.
