Switzerland and Algeria meet in Vancouver with a World Cup Round of 16 place at stake. The victors will advance to face either Colombia or Ghana in the next round, keeping alive their hopes of a deep run in the tournament.

The Swiss arrive at the knockout stage with a reputation for consistency but historical frailty. They have advanced to the last 16 in four of the past five tournaments, yet they have not won a knockout fixture at the competition since 1938. Manager Murat Yakin will hope to end that long wait against an Algerian side led by his counterpart Vladimir Petković.

Both camps face injury setbacks ahead of the tie. Stuttgart defender Luca Jaquez misses the match for Switzerland because of a muscle problem, while Algeria remain without Wolfsburg forward Mohamed Amoura as he continues his recovery from a thigh injury.

Yakin opts for a three-man defence featuring Nico Elvedi, Manuel Akanji and Denis Zakaria, shielded by Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Granit Xhaka captains the side from midfield alongside Remo Freuler, with Ricardo Rodríguez and Dan Ndoye operating as wing-backs. Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi starts after proving instrumental in reviving the Swiss fortunes following a sluggish group-stage opening. He joins Breel Embolo and Ruben Vargas in the front three.

Algeria’s attacking threat centres on captain Riyad Mahrez, supported by a creative trio featuring Borussia Dortmund’s Ramy Bensebaini, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Fares Chaïbi and Bayer Leverkusen’s Ibrahim Maza. Manager Vladimir Petković deploys them behind a midfield double pivot and a back four including Rayan Aït-Nouri and Aïssa Mandi.

The match offers Algeria a chance to extend their tournament progress, while Switzerland seek to convert regular knockout appearances into tangible advancement beyond the last 16. The outcome in Vancouver will determine who keeps their World Cup hopes alive.
