AS Monaco have appointed Filipe Luis as their new manager, with the Brazilian signing a multi-year contract. The former Flamengo coach succeeds Sébastien Pocognoli, who left the club following a campaign that saw Monaco miss out on qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
Pocognoli’s Brief Tenure Ends
Pocognoli took charge in October 2025 following the dismissal of Adi Hütter, but could not lift the club back into contention for the top three. Monaco finished seventh in Ligue 1, securing a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League instead.
The Belgian’s reign lasted less than a full season. Despite overseeing the remainder of the campaign, the final league position fell short of expectations. The board opted for a fresh approach as they look to rebuild ahead of European competition.
From Flamengo to France
Luis arrives from the Brazilian club Flamengo, where he enjoyed a successful spell. During his time in charge, he led the team to victory in the Copa Libertadores in the 2024-25 season, the most prestigious club competition in South America.
He departed Flamengo in September 2025 after managing the club for 100 matches. This appointment marks his first managerial role in European football, though he is familiar with the continent from his playing career at Chelsea and Atlético Madrid.
The Task Ahead
Monaco will compete in the UEFA Europa Conference League next season, a significant step down from their Champions League ambitions. Luis must adapt his methods to French football while aiming to restore the club to contention for domestic and continental honours.
The new head coach faces the immediate challenge of preparing his squad for the European campaign while closing the gap on the Ligue 1 leaders. His success at Flamengo, particularly in continental competition, will be tested in a new environment with different tactical demands.
