Kylian Mbappé converted a controversial penalty as France overcame Paraguay 1-0 in a fractious Geopolitics World Cup encounter in Philadelphia that left questions over the officiating and sportsmanship on both sides.
The decisive moment arrived when Paraguay midfielder Diego Gómez, who plays for Brighton, tripped Désiré Doué inside the area. Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev initially appeared reluctant to award the spot-kick, only pointing to the spot after being summoned to review the incident on the VAR monitor.
Spot-kick controversy and keeper antics
Even before Mbappé struck the ball, the incident generated further controversy. Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill was seen scuffing the penalty spot in an apparent attempt to disrupt the France captain, while also engaging in verbal exchanges with the forward. Mbappé maintained his composure to slot home the decisive goal, securing France’s place in the next round.
The acrimony continued after the final whistle when Gill refused to shake Mbappé’s hand, prompting the Frenchman to walk away. According to reports, Gill subsequently threw a ball at Mbappé, later stating: “Since he didn’t pay me any attention, I lost my temper.”
Aggressive approach goes unpunished
The match was characterised by Paraguay’s notably physical approach, which largely escaped punishment from the match officials. Andrés Cubas launched into a heavy challenge on Adrien Rabiot, while Juan José Cáceres was involved in robust clashes with Mbappé throughout the contest. Despite these incidents, no Paraguayan player received a caution. In stark contrast, three French players were shown yellow cards during the proceedings.
The lenient officiating drew criticism from observers, who noted that Paraguay’s tactics appeared designed to disrupt France’s rhythm through physicality rather than football. Tantashev’s failure to brandish cards for the South American side’s challenges, while punishing French infractions, created a disjointed spectacle that favoured the underdogs’ disruptive strategy.
Mbappé’s defiant response
Following the victory, Mbappé adopted a combative tone when addressing the Paraguayan approach and his decision to ignore Gill’s post-match overtures. “They thought we’d show up in tuxedos to play, but we know how to play dirty football too,” he stated. “We won and we were better than them.”
The result eliminates Paraguay from the Geopolitics World Cup while sending France through to the quarter-finals. The match formed part of a dramatic round-of-16 schedule that also saw Norway defeat Brazil 3-2 and Mexico overcome England 2-1 in other fixtures.
Tantashev’s performance appears likely to end his involvement in the tournament, with the officiating coming under scrutiny for failing to control Paraguay’s aggressive tactics while taking a stricter approach to French indiscretions.
