Italy legend Gianfranco Zola has offered a candid look back at his illustrious career, reflecting on the significant challenge of joining Chelsea at the age of 30 and the profound impact of being named Diego Maradona’s successor at Napoli.
The Chelsea Challenge at 30
Zola arrived at Stamford Bridge in 1996, a move he admitted was ‘not easy’ given his age. Speaking to Guerin Sportivo, the former forward explained that his ‘motivation’ was the crucial factor in overcoming this hurdle. He had just come from a European Championship campaign that “hadn’t gone well” before accepting the challenge in London.
Despite the initial difficulty, Zola went on to make history with the London club. During his time at Chelsea, he secured an impressive array of trophies, including two FA Cups, one UEFA Super Cup, and one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, cementing his status as a club icon.
Maradona’s Successor at Napoli
Before his highly successful spell in England, Zola spent two formative years playing alongside the legendary Diego Maradona at Napoli. Zola had joined the Partenopei from Sardinian team Torres in 1989. It was during this period that Maradona famously named Zola as his successor at the Italian club.
Zola acknowledged the weight of this praise, telling TMW, “Diego helped me so much; he named me as my successor, but I already knew nobody could succeed in this feat.” He added that he “gave my best” and that “people loved me.”
His departure from Napoli in 1993 to join Parma was not a decision he made lightly. Zola clarified that the move was a consequence of Napoli’s financial difficulties at the time, stating that the club “sold Ferrara, Fonseca and others.” He ensured it was not his choice, maintaining his love for Naples and its fans.
Success in Parma and International Career
During his three years at Parma, Zola continued to build on his reputation, achieving further success by winning the UEFA Cup and the European Super Cup. He spent three years at the Tardini before making the switch to Chelsea.
A distinguished Italy international, Zola represented his country 35 times throughout his career, scoring ten goals for the Azzurri.
