Gianni Infantino is poised to extend his presidency until 2031 after securing overwhelming support from the global football community, despite opposition from the German Football Federation (DFB). The 57-year-old Swiss administrator has reportedly secured backing from more than 200 of the 211 FIFA member associations ahead of next year’s election.

The presidential vote will take place at FIFA’s Congress in Morocco in March 2027. No challengers have emerged to contest the position, effectively clearing the path for Infantino to claim a fourth consecutive term in office. Such an outcome would keep him at the helm of world football’s governing body until 2031, completing more than 15 years in charge.

The DFB confirmed it did not sign a letter of support for Infantino’s re-election bid. This dissenting stance from one of Europe’s most influential federations stands in stark contrast to the widespread approval Infantino has received elsewhere across the confederations. German football officials have not publicly detailed their specific objections to the incumbent’s continued leadership, though their refusal to endorse him marks a notable break from the consensus building around his candidacy.

Infantino initially assumed office in February 2016 following the suspension of Sepp Blatter, with Issa Hayatou having served as acting president during the interim period. His first election came at a special congress called to restore stability after the corruption crisis that engulfed the organisation.

Since taking charge, the governing body has implemented significant reforms to the men’s international calendar and the Club World Cup format, including the controversial expansion of the men’s World Cup to 48 teams. Recent months have seen the organisation face criticism regarding logistical challenges at the ongoing tournament in North America. However, these controversies appear unlikely to derail Infantino’s campaign given the lack of alternative candidates and his substantial base of support across Africa, Asia and the Americas.

The choice of Morocco as host for the 2027 Congress reflects the continent’s growing influence within FIFA’s administrative structures. With Infantino’s re-election appearing inevitable, attention will turn to how his continued leadership affects the implementation of the expanded World Cup format and the allocation of development resources to member associations.
