Granit Xhaka has reached a verbal agreement to join Chelsea this summer, paving the way for a reunion with former manager Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge. The Switzerland international is now awaiting the completion of negotiations between the two clubs to formalise the transfer.

Sky Germany reports that the 33-year-old midfielder has shaken hands on personal terms with the West London side. Chelsea are currently in discussions with Sunderland, where Xhaka has spent just one season following his move from Bayer Leverkusen last summer. The Switzerland captain remains bound to the Stadium of Light until 2028, placing Sunderland in a strong negotiating position.

Previous Success with Alonso

The prospective deal would see Xhaka work again under Alonso, who officially assumes his duties as Chelsea head coach on 1 July. The duo previously collaborated at Leverkusen, enjoying a highly successful spell that culminated in the domestic double during the 2023/24 season.

During that campaign, they secured both the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal. Xhaka subsequently departed for Sunderland, committing to a long-term contract. His tenure in the north-east has lasted only twelve months, yet Chelsea believe his experience and established understanding of Alonso’s tactical approach justify the investment.

Transfer Terms and Current Status

Sunderland are expected to seek approximately €15 million to sanction the midfielder’s departure. This valuation aligns closely with the fee the Black Cats paid to Leverkusen to secure his services in the previous transfer window, suggesting the Championship side aim to recoup their initial outlay.

Although the verbal understanding between player and club marks substantial progress, the transfer cannot proceed until Chelsea and Sunderland agree on the financial package. With Alonso’s start date approaching rapidly, the parties will likely aim to resolve the outstanding details before the new manager officially takes the reins on 1 July.
