Cagliari are in advanced negotiations to sign Leicester City midfielder Harry Winks, with the Serie A club having reportedly reached an agreement over a transfer fee. The deal now hinges on finalising personal terms with the 30-year-old, according to reports from Italy.
Sardinian Move Edges Closer
Transfer pundit Alfredo Pedullà claims that Cagliari and Leicester have already settled on a fee for the former Tottenham Hotspur player. The clubs are now attempting to agree personal terms with Winks, who would subsequently travel to Sardinia to undergo medical examinations before completing the switch.
The midfielder faces an uncertain future at Leicester following their relegation from the Premier League. Although his contract runs until June 2027, the drop to the Championship makes his departure increasingly likely. Cagliari’s interest represents an opportunity for Winks to remain in top-flight football.
Return to Serie A
This would mark Winks’ second spell in Italian football. He previously gained experience in Serie A during the 2022-23 season while on loan at Sampdoria. That temporary stint concluded with the club’s relegation to Serie B, though Winks’s performances evidently left a positive impression on scouts in the peninsula.
Leicester signed Winks from Tottenham last summer in a deal worth €11.6 million. Across all competitions this season, he made 36 appearances for the Foxes, scoring twice and providing two assists. Despite his consistent presence in the side, he could not prevent the club from suffering an immediate return to the Championship.
With two years remaining on his contract, Leicester may be obliged to accept a reduced fee compared to their initial outlay, particularly given the financial realities of second-tier football. This scenario has presented Cagliari with the chance to secure a player with significant Premier League experience.
Alternative Interest
While the Cagliari move appears the most advanced option, Winks has also attracted interest from Wrexham. The Welsh club have emerged as potential suitors, though the prospect of returning to Serie A may prove more appealing for the England international.
Should personal terms be agreed in the coming days, Winks would join Cagliari’s pre-season preparations as they look to establish themselves in the Italian top flight following promotion.
