1. FC Heidenheim staged a dramatic late comeback to defeat Dynamo Dresden 5-3 in the 2. Bundesliga, netting all five goals in the final 25 minutes after the visitors were reduced to ten men.
Frank Schmidt’s side looked set for defeat until a pivotal moment involving Thomas Keller turned the contest on its head. Keller, who joined Dresden on loan from Heidenheim this summer, received a red card that left his side a man down and allowed his parent club to mount a remarkable recovery. The Saxon outfit had twice held the lead but could not withstand the late onslaught.
Vincent Vermeij struck the only goal of the first half for the hosts, though Dresden carried the advantage for much of the second period. The game’s complexion changed completely following the dismissal, with Heidenheim eventually finding the net through five different scorers.
Friedrich Müller compounded Dresden’s misery by putting through his own net, while substitutes Oualid Mhamid, Julian Niehues and Maximilian Breuning all found the target from the 87th minute onwards to complete the rout.
The victory maintains a remarkable pattern of high-scoring football for Heidenheim this season. The club have both scored and conceded 12 goals across their first four competitive fixtures, averaging six goals per game.
Dresden, meanwhile, continue to struggle away from home. The visitors have lost their first two road matches of the campaign, shipping eight goals in the process and leaving their defensive vulnerabilities exposed.
