Inter coach Cristian Chivu has accepted full responsibility for the team’s recent defensive struggles and the disappointing 4-3 Champions League defeat to Club Brugge. The coach also confirmed a significant blow, with star striker Lautaro Martinez set to miss action until after the November international break due to an injury sustained in the same match.
Martinez Injury Blow
Martinez, who scored a brace against Club Brugge before his injury, will be unavailable for approximately one month. This timeline means the Argentine forward will miss the crucial Milan derby later this month, a significant setback for the Nerazzurri.
Chivu Takes Responsibility for Defensive Woes
Inter’s defensive record has been a point of concern, with the team conceding eight goals in six Serie A matches and a further six in two Champions League fixtures. Chivu directly addressed these issues, stating, ‘It has to begin with me. I’m the one primarily responsible.’ He emphasised the need for a shared mindset and unity within the squad to overcome adversity.
The coach acknowledged that ‘something didn’t work in the final 30 minutes against Brugge’ but urged the team not to ‘lose sight of what we did well in the first hour.’ He stressed the importance of reacting quickly and finding new energy rather than dwelling on the defeat.
Looking Ahead to Bologna
The Nerazzurri will look to bounce back in Serie A when they face Bologna away from home. Chivu noted that Bologna, under Raffaele Palladino, have developed a clear identity based on vertical play and intensity. He warned that Inter must win individual battles to avoid trouble against a well-organised opponent.
Squad Depth and Goalkeeper Options
With Martinez sidelined, questions have arisen about opportunities for other forwards. Chivu praised Ange-Yoan Bonny, stating he has ‘impressed me at the beginning of this season’ and ‘always shown his quality when he has come on.’ He added that Bonny’s moment to start will come, expressing satisfaction with his current contributions.
Regarding the goalkeeping position, following criticism of Josep Martinez after the Brugge loss, Chivu indicated that Ivan Provedel could feature in upcoming games. ‘Provedel has my respect and trust. I consider him a goalkeeper who will help us significantly,’ Chivu affirmed.
