Ivan Juric has formally ended his association with Atalanta after terminating his contract by mutual consent, clearing the way for him to take charge of newly-promoted Serie A side Monza. The Lombardy club, which secured an immediate return to the top flight after a year away in Serie B, is expected to announce the Croatian as their new head coach in the coming days.

The mutual consent agreement, confirmed by Atalanta this week, was a necessary administrative step before Juric could accept the Monza position. The 49-year-old had been dismissed from his role at the Bergamo outfit after just 15 competitive matches in charge of the 2025-26 campaign, continuing a pattern of short tenures across recent seasons. Since September 2024, he has managed Roma for precisely 12 matches before leaving, then spent time at Southampton where he took charge of 16 games prior to his dismissal.

Monza rebuild after promotion

Monza will represent Juric’s fourth club in less than two years, offering an opportunity to stabilise a career that has encountered successive setbacks. The club earned promotion back to Serie A via the play-offs under previous coach Paolo Bianco, who secured their immediate return following relegation last season.

However, Bianco’s tenure has already concluded. The Italian tactician parted company with the Lombardy club on June 19, terminating his contract by mutual consent shortly after achieving promotion. He has since been appointed as the new head coach of Pisa, who were recently relegated to Serie B.

Challenges ahead

For Monza, the appointment signals a fresh approach as they prepare for life back in the top division. Juric will face the immediate challenge of building a competitive squad capable of avoiding the relegation battle that characterised their previous Serie A campaign, which ended after just one year.

The Croatian’s recent record suggests he possesses the tactical knowledge to operate at the highest level, though questions remain about his ability to establish long-term stability. His stints at Roma and Southampton both ended prematurely, while his Atalanta tenure lasted only a matter of months.

Monza supporters will hope that Juric can replicate the form that previously made him one of Serie A’s respected coaches, guiding the club to safety in what promises to be a demanding season ahead. The official announcement of his appointment is anticipated once final administrative details are completed.
