Jose Mourinho has been granted elevated transfer authority at Real Madrid, with the Portuguese manager now serving as the primary architect of the club’s summer recruitment rather than a consultant to it. ESPN report that Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez and Manchester City centre-back Ruben Dias have emerged as priority targets as Madrid shift their strategy toward proven, experienced players.

Recruitment philosophy shift

The change follows a summit held on June 9 at Madrid’s Hotel Santo Mauro, where Mourinho met with director general Jose Angel Sanchez, chief scout Juni Calafat, and agent Jorge Mendes to map out the squad overhaul. Where previous managers including Carlo Ancelotti often saw reinforcement requests delayed or ignored, Mourinho now holds decisive influence over target identification and priority-setting.

The shift is already visible in completed business. Last summer’s signings averaged 21 years of age; this year’s arrivals average nearly 29. Marc Cucurella has joined from Chelsea for €55 million, Bernardo Silva arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City, and Ibrahima Konate signed following the expiry of his Liverpool contract. Denzel Dumfries is expected to follow from Inter Milan for approximately €20 million to replace the departing Dani Carvajal.

Midfield and defensive priorities

Fernandez remains high on Mourinho’s midfield shortlist, though significant obstacles persist. Diario AS report that Chelsea are seeking around €138 million for the Argentina international, while Real Madrid prefer to keep the fee below €100 million plus bonuses. The 24-year-old has not hidden his interest in moving to the Spanish capital, but the valuation gap indicates where formal negotiations must begin before any deal becomes realistic.

Should the Fernandez pursuit fail, West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is under consideration as a fallback option. In defence, Mourinho views Dias as the ideal partner for the already-secured Konate, given that Antonio Rudiger is turning 33 and Eder Militao has struggled with injuries. Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck remain alternatives on the defensive shortlist, suggesting Dias is preferred but not the only route being explored.

Squad management and forward planning

Mourinho’s expanded influence extends to departures. The club is exploring terminating Dani Ceballos’ contract a year early to manage the wage structure ahead of further arrivals.

Further forward, Madrid retain interest in a €150 million move for Julian Alvarez, though this depends partly on how the Vinicius Junior situation develops. The Brazilian’s contract extension negotiations remain on hold until after the World Cup, leaving the attacking budget in a state of deliberate suspension.

The next meaningful development will be whether Madrid submit formal approaches for either Fernandez or Dias, and whether Chelsea and Manchester City adjust their valuations sufficiently to bring either pursuit within range of completion before the window tightens.
