Inter captain Lautaro Martinez has spoken publicly for the first time since Argentina‘s 2026 World Cup Final defeat, expressing his frustration at watching the 1-0 loss to Spain from the substitutes’ bench.
The Serie A Capocannoniere, who finished as the Italian top flight’s leading scorer with title winners Inter last season, took to Instagram to address supporters following the final. “We gave our all to win a second consecutive World Cup, but this time it was not our destiny. I am so very proud to be ARGENTINE,” he wrote. “I would’ve liked to have tried to help the team on the field, but never mind.”
Tournament contributions overlooked
Martinez’s omission proved particularly contentious given his decisive contributions during Argentina’s campaign. The striker scored three goals in seven tournament appearances, including late winners against Switzerland and England in the semi-final.
However, the forward started only the first four matches before losing his place to Julian Alvarez. In the final, coach Lionel Scaloni opted not to introduce Martinez at any stage, instead using his final substitution in extra time to bring on defender Marco Senesi. Argentina failed to register a single shot on target until deep into the additional period.
Scaloni decision scrutinised
The choice to prioritise defensive reinforcements over Martinez’s attacking prowess drew heavy criticism in the Argentine media. Despite entering the tournament as South American champions and boasting 40 goals and 13 assists in 84 senior international appearances, the striker was reduced to a spectator role as La Albiceleste failed to retain their crown.
Martinez, who previously lifted the 2022 World Cup and Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, thanked travelling supporters in his message. “Thank you to everyone who supported us during this tournament, travelling kilometre after kilometre to be close to us, and all those who encouraged us from every corner of our country,” he added.
