More than 10,000 Lazio supporters marched through the streets of Rome in a coordinated demonstration against president Claudio Lotito, demanding that he relinquish control of the Serie A club.
The protest, which organisers described as “the biggest ever manifestation of dissent” in Italian football history, began at Ponte Milvio and proceeded to the gates of the Stadio Flaminio. Supporters carried banners and waved club flags while chanting slogans calling for Lotito to sell the club. Some banners directed insults at the president, reflecting the depth of frustration among the fanbase.
At the Flaminio, organisers had erected a stage for speeches, music and entertainment, turning the march into a day-long festival of protest. Demonstrators held aloft signs demanding that Lotito “free” the club from his influence, a reference to their belief that his ownership has stifled the team’s potential.
Year-long boycott escalates
The Rome gathering represents a significant intensification of a campaign that has seen Lazio’s ultras boycott home matches for most of the past year. Despite having purchased season tickets, these supporters have stayed away from matches to signal their displeasure at how the club is being run.
The situation deteriorated further last week when news emerged that Lotito had invested in acquiring Reggina, another Italian football club. This acquisition appears to have convinced supporters that the president’s focus is divided, prompting calls for him to sever ties with Lazio entirely.
Lotito has presided over the Biancocelesti since 2004, when he took control of a club near bankruptcy. While he has kept Lazio financially stable and compliant with regulations over the subsequent two decades, fans argue that this cautious approach has restricted the team’s competitive ambitions.
With Lotito showing no indication that he intends to step back or sell, and with the ultras committed to continuing their boycott of home fixtures, the standoff between Lazio’s ownership and its most passionate supporters appears deadlocked.
