Leonardo Spinazzola has committed his future to Napoli by signing a contract extension that will keep the experienced Italy international at the Serie A champions until June 2028.

The 33-year-old defender was set to leave as a free agent as his previous agreement approached its conclusion, creating significant uncertainty regarding his continued presence at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. However, that situation has now been resolved with a fresh two-year deal that secures his services for the seasons ahead, reversing earlier expectations that he would depart due to limited playing time during the recent campaign.

Debut Season Contributions

Spinazzola initially arrived in Naples during the summer of 2024, joining as a free agent following five seasons with Roma, who had previously invested €29.5 million to acquire him from Juventus in 2019. Across his first year with the Partenopei, he amassed 72 competitive appearances across all competitions and played a supporting role in the club’s successful defence of domestic honours, contributing to victories in both the Scudetto and the Supercoppa Italiana.

The veteran full-back offers significant tactical flexibility, capable of operating on either the right or left side of defence, advancing into wide midfield positions, or even featuring as part of an attacking trident when required. This versatility provides valuable rotation options across multiple departments of the pitch.

International Experience

Spinazzola’s standing in Italian football was cemented by his integral role in the Azzurri’s UEFA European Championship triumph in 2021. His tournament performance drew widespread praise until a devastating Achilles tendon injury sustained during the quarter-final victory over Belgium prematurely ended his participation. The 33-year-old has since recovered to maintain his position within the domestic game’s upper echelons.

With his immediate future now secured, Spinazzola will continue to offer depth and winning experience as Napoli prepare to defend their league title in the forthcoming campaign. The extension ensures the club retains a proven performer capable of influencing matches across various competitions, despite the fitness challenges that restricted his minutes during portions of the previous term.
