Como’s attempt to sign Chelsea centre-forward Liam Delap has encountered serious difficulties, with the Serie A club confronting both a substantial transfer fee and the striker’s desire to continue his career in England.

Sky Sport Italia reports that Chelsea will not consider a loan move for the 22-year-old former England youth international. Instead, the west London club demands a permanent sale valued at roughly €46 million (£40 million). This figure presents a significant challenge for Como, who have already invested heavily during the current window under manager Cesc Fabregas. The club has dedicated €60 million to tying Nico Paz to a more secure contract and a further €30 million to acquiring defender Trevoh Chalobah from Stamford Bridge. Subsequent additions including Yan Couto, Kaiki, Mattia Liberali and Luis Milla have further depleted the resources available for new arrivals.

Delap favours Premier League stay

The financial barrier is compounded by the player’s own wishes. Reports originating in the United Kingdom indicate Delap would prefer a transfer that keeps him in the Premier League for the 2026-27 season. This stance comes despite Como’s confirmed qualification for the Champions League next term, which would offer the forward the chance to compete at the highest continental level.

Uncertain future under Alonso

Delap arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer for €35 million (£30 million) but faces an uncertain future following the appointment of Xabi Alonso as head coach. The Spaniard is not expected to rely heavily on the forward during the upcoming campaign, prompting Chelsea to sanction an exit should suitable terms materialise.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano initially disclosed Como’s approach earlier this week. However, the convergence of Chelsea’s firm stance on a permanent high-value deal and Delap’s personal preferences suggests the transfer remains unlikely to progress unless either the Italian club significantly increases its offer or the player alters his stance on leaving English football.
